CARRYING OVER INTO NEXT WEEK:
THOUGHTS ON THIS PAST WEEK’S FOOD:
This week, I was really reminded of how undisciplined our family has been with food. We’ve gotten into the habit of buying what we want and having exactly what we want to for dinner. There’s nothing wrong with doing that on occasion, but it’s not good for us as a way of life. We rarely buy out of season produce, but there’s still too many downsides: we end up eating too many things that aren’t healthy for us, we end up wasting food, we end up having to rush to make something last minute, we don’t try new recipes, and we spend too much money on groceries. We also don’t end up eating as a family.
It was hard for us to get back into the groove of things, but we made some progress. I’m hoping we can make more this week. Madeline had a great time teething on carrots. She wouldn’t touch the stir-fry, but liked the eggs with cabbage. She also ate the eggs I scrambled with some cheese and braised greens. She sampled the summer roll innards, but didn’t do much more than chew on them.
All in all, it was a good start to CSA season. I plan to be better about sticking to our menu this week. As the season picks up, we’ll need to do this in order not to waste any of our share. Our house is in a state right now because of some renovations, but we’re hoping things will be settled down enough to start eating as a family again the week after next.
I hope you all had a great week filled with great food!
